Day 19: Marriage

10 Sep 2010

I woke up at 8:00 AM and took 1 piracetam and choline, and again at 1:00 PM and 6:00 PM. I did manage to get a good six hours of sleep last night, with the help of one more piracetam. There was plenty of detailed dreaming as a result. REM sleep! And after today, I don't think I'll have any problem falling into unconsciousness.

My mother's wedding was this evening, and it was amazing in almost every possible way. The ceremony was accompanied by a barbershop quartet. Their vows included the phrase "love you like a duck". (No, I don't know either.) Laughter abounded. It was one of the most unique weddings I've ever been to, more or less perfectly executed with exactly the right atmosphere they were looking for. And it was a hell of a great time for everyone there.

I did meet a few "new relatives", but I didn't get to talk with them for very long, since everything there was so busy. I spent a lot of time with "old relatives" who I hadn't seen in years. It was wonderful to catch up with them after all that time. I hung out for a while with my cousin and his girlfriend, who happen to enjoy my videos. They're pretty sharp and seem to share similar values. We discussed, of all things, "rocket science", and the issues he's having while trying to develop a guidance system modeled after the kinds that were used in the 1960s. Apparently it's hard to find information about this sort of thing without people mistaking you for a terrorist.

The whole day was the kind of experience that makes you reflect on how valuable and important the connections between us really are, and how a marriage brings more than just two people together. It joins families, friends, groups and communities together in novel combinations, introducing people to one another and enabling the kind of personal and social growth that lasts a lifetime. I was ecstatic to see these new beginnings unfold today, and be a part of it. Everyone should have the opportunity to unify their life with someone they love and experience this for themselves.

Anyway, we're all pretty much wiped out from running around all night and cleaning everything up afterwards, and fortunately we don't actually have that much to do tomorrow. I'm still having a fantastic time getting to know New Aunt and Uncle, who thus far appear to be the best additions to my family since basically ever. I'm still shocked at how much we have in common. That's not something I get to feel very often.

Bonus from today:

The rare double-reverse-drag queen Zinnia.

  4. I'm extremely glad the wedding went so flawlessly and that your new family are to your liking. The last time someone in my gene pool married it was to a catholic family, lol.
